We've compiled answers to the most common questions about Geona, our features, and how to get the most from the app. If you don't find what you're looking for, please contact us with your question.

General Questions

Geona is a real-time local intelligence network that connects you to what's happening around you through location-based posts called Geons. Unlike traditional social media, Geona focuses exclusively on content relevant to your current location, making it easier to discover local events, deals, services, and emergency updates.

Geona is currently being rolled out in select cities, with plans for global expansion. The app works best in areas with an active user base, so we're focusing on building strong local communities before expanding to new regions. Stay tuned for announcements about availability in your area.

Unlike traditional social media that shows content based on algorithms or followers, Geona focuses exclusively on location-relevance and real-time updates. Content is temporary by default, ensuring you always see what's happening now, not what was trending yesterday. Geona also features dual map layers (real-time and persistent) to help you discover different types of local content.

Yes, a free account is required to use Geona. This helps us maintain community standards and enables features like the XP system, notifications, and content personalization. You can create an account using your email, Google, or Apple account in just a few taps.

Features & Functionality

Geons are location-based posts that can contain videos, images, or text. Standard Geons are temporary and disappear after 1 hour, ensuring content is always fresh and relevant. Premium users can create Geons with longer lifespans, while businesses can create persistent Geons that remain visible until removed. Popular Geons can gain extended lifetimes based on engagement.

Geona features a wide variety of location-based content including restaurant flash sales, local events, job opportunities, service offerings, traffic updates, emergency alerts, community gatherings, and more. You can filter Geons by category to find exactly what you're looking for in your area.

The Real-Time Map displays Geons that disappear in 1 hour, showing only fresh and immediately relevant content. The Persistent Map shows longer-lasting content like business profiles, upcoming events, or job listings that remain visible for extended periods. You can switch between these layers based on what you're looking for.

The 'Watch this Geon' feature allows you to save interesting Geons to revisit later, similar to bookmarking. Popular Geons with high engagement automatically gain extended lifetimes beyond the standard 1-hour limit, ensuring important information doesn't disappear too quickly. You can opt-in for notifications when Geons you're watching receive updates.

Users earn XP (experience points) by posting Geons, engaging with content through likes and comments, and contributing valuable information to the community. Higher levels unlock perks like special badges, profile boosts, extended Geon lifetimes, and eventually, monetization options. This gamification encourages quality contributions and active participation.

Business & Monetization

Businesses can use Geona to attract foot traffic with flash promotions, build a local following, get real-time engagement analytics, and connect with customers in their immediate vicinity without relying on expensive traditional advertising. Verified Business accounts can create persistent Geons, sponsor content for greater visibility, and access premium analytics features.

Businesses can choose from several tiers of subscription plans, starting with a basic verified profile and extending to premium options with advanced features. These include the ability to create multiple persistent Geons, access detailed analytics dashboards, obtain priority content placement, and receive dedicated support. Visit our Pricing page for specific plan details and current rates.

Geona offers several advantages over traditional local marketing: 1) It targets people who are physically near your business right now, 2) It allows for instant, time-limited promotions that create urgency, 3) It provides real-time engagement metrics so you can see what's working, and 4) It's generally more cost-effective than print ads, radio, or even digital advertising platforms that don't have Geona's location precision.

Yes, Geona has monetization options for regular users who reach higher levels in our XP system. Once you've established yourself as a trusted contributor, you can access features like sponsored Geons, tip collection, and promotional partnerships. This is particularly valuable for local influencers, service providers, and content creators with engaged followings.

Privacy & Security

While Geona is location-based by nature, we give you control over your privacy. You can adjust location-sharing settings, choose whether your profile is discoverable, and decide if your posts should be anonymous. We never share your precise location with other users unless you explicitly choose to do so.

Geona only accesses your location when you're actively using the app. We don't track your movements in the background unless you've explicitly enabled background location services for features like nearby notifications. You can review and modify these permissions at any time in your device settings or the app's privacy controls.

We maintain community guidelines that prohibit harmful, misleading, or inappropriate content. Users can report violations, and our moderation team reviews these reports promptly. We also employ automated systems to detect potential violations. Accounts that repeatedly break guidelines may be temporarily restricted or permanently banned, depending on the severity of the violations.

While you need to create an account to use Geona, you can choose to post Geons anonymously if you prefer not to associate them with your profile. Note that even anonymous posts must comply with our community guidelines, and we maintain private records for moderation purposes.

Technical Questions

Geona is designed to be battery-efficient while still providing accurate location features. When actively using the app, battery usage is comparable to other map-based applications. If you enable background notifications for nearby Geons, there will be some additional battery impact, but you can adjust these settings to balance functionality with battery life.

For core functionality, Geona requires an internet connection (either cellular data or WiFi). However, you can still view previously loaded content and saved Geons while offline. We're working on enhanced offline capabilities for future updates.

Geona uses a combination of GPS, WiFi, and cellular triangulation to determine your location. In most urban and suburban areas, accuracy is typically within a few meters. In areas with poor signal or when indoors, accuracy may decrease, but you can manually adjust the location of Geons you create if needed.

Geona requires iOS 13.0+ or Android 8.0+ to run properly. For optimal performance, we recommend devices with at least 2GB of RAM and GPS capabilities. The app takes approximately 100MB of storage space, though this may vary slightly with updates.
